In a landmark decision to promote eco-friendly urban transportation, the Maharashtra government has approved a new bike taxi policy. The policy, introduced on Monday, aims to enhance last-mile connectivity while prioritizing passenger safety and environmental sustainability.

Key Conditions of Maharashtra’s Bike Taxi Policy

  • Electric Fleet Mandate: All bike taxis must be fully electric, aligning with the state’s green mobility goals.
  • Operational Scope: Services will be permitted in cities with a population of over one lakh.
  • Safety Measures:
    • GPS tracking and emergency contact systems mandatory.
    • Separating shields for female passenger safety.
    • Seasonal covers for monsoon protection.
  • Driver & Passenger Regulations:
    • Drivers must be above 20 years old.
    • Only one passenger allowed per ride.
    • Children under 12 barred from using the service.
  • Insurance Coverage: Aggregators must provide accident and fatality insurance for both riders and passengers.
  • Permit System: 50 non-transferable permits will be issued, valid for five years.
  • Distance Cap: Maximum ride distance limited to 15 km to ensure service efficiency.

Promoting Inclusivity & Women’s Participation

The policy encourages gender diversity, setting a target of 50% female bike taxi drivers, though no strict deadline has been specified.
