Pune RTO Cracks Down on Phone Use While Driving: Hefty Fines Ahead
In a bold move to curb reckless driving, Pune’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) is drafting strict new rules targeting drivers who use mobile phones or electronic gadgets behind the wheel. The proposed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will apply to all passenger vehicles—government, semi-government, and private—with violators facing heavy penalties.
The crackdown follows a shocking incident where a bus driver was caught watching a cricket match while driving, exposing the dangers of distracted driving. Authorities are also alarmed by the rising trend of auto-rickshaw and car drivers using phones or earbuds, significantly increasing accident risks.
Pune’s roads have seen a worrying spike in accidents, with 1,404 reported in 2024—resulting in 320 deaths and 1,320 injuries. Compared to 2023’s 1,230 accidents, the upward trend has pushed officials to act. A dedicated expert panel is now shaping legal measures to enforce stricter penalties and improve road safety.
With public complaints mounting, the Transport Department has ordered strict action against offenders. The new SOP aims to instill discipline and reduce fatalities, signaling a no-tolerance approach to irresponsible driving.
