Pune: Low Mango Supply Pushes Prices Up; Hapus Sells for Rs 1,500 Per Dozen
Pune, 30th March 2025: With Gudi Padwa being celebrated today, the demand for mangoes has surged, but a low yield due to weather changes has resulted in higher prices in Pune’s markets. This year, the arrival of Hapus (Alphonso) mangoes is significantly lower compared to previous years, causing prices to range between ₹800 and ₹1,500 per dozen. Last year, the prices were between ₹500 and ₹700 for the same period.
Mango traders at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard have attributed the lower yield to unfavorable weather conditions. The expected cold spell did not occur in Konkan during November and December, which led to blossom drop and reduced mango cultivation.
Traditionally, March sees an increased arrival of mangoes, with around 4,000 to 5,000 boxes arriving daily from Konkan. However, this year, only 1,000 to 2,000 boxes are reaching the market each day, leading to a supply crunch. Currently, a box containing four to eight dozen raw mangoes is priced between ₹2,500 and ₹6,000, depending on the grade.
Traders predict that mango arrivals will peak between April 10 and May 10, potentially stabilizing prices. However, due to reduced cultivation in the first bloom, the Hapus mango season may end earlier than usual. Typically, the season extends until early June, but this year, it is likely to conclude sooner, affecting availability and prices in the coming weeks.
