In a powerful and symbolic gesture, the Indian government entrusted two women officers—Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi—to lead the briefing on ‘Operation Sindoor’, the military’s precision strikes against terror camps in Pakistan. The operation was India’s response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.

The name ‘Operation Sindoor’— a tribute to the widows of the terror attack – along with the decision to have women officers front the briefing, sent a strong message. Colonel Qureshi confirmed that nine terror camps were destroyed in the strikes, emphasizing that only terror-linked targets were hit—no Pakistani military installations were attacked.

Wing Commander Singh, a decorated helicopter pilot, stated, “India has shown restraint, but our forces are fully prepared to counter any Pakistani misadventure.”

Who Are the Women Behind the Briefing?

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh: A permanent commission officer in the Indian Air Force’s flying branch, she joined via the NCC and engineering before becoming a helicopter pilot.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi: The first woman to lead an Indian Army contingent in a multinational military exercise, she serves in the Corps of Signals.

Operation Sindoor: A Strategic Strike

India launched 24 missile strikes across nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, killing 70 terrorists and injuring 60. The operation, lasting just 25 minutes, used precision-guided munitions like HAMMER bombs and SCALP missiles to avoid collateral damage.
