Weather Alert: Icy Cold Conditions Return to Maharashtra as Lowest Temp Drops to 5°C; IMD Issues Warning
Maharashtra | December 16, 2025 – Even as the intense cold wave that recently gripped Maharashtra eased slightly after December 14, icy conditions are set to persist across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning, stating that the next 24 hours remain critical as severe chill continues in several regions, urging residents to remain vigilant.
Cold Snap Details and Forecast
According to IMD data, the state recorded its lowest minimum temperature at Jeur, which dropped to 5°C. Several other districts reported minimum temperatures hovering around 10°C.
Immediate Weather Forecast (Next 4-5 Days)
- Maximum Temperature: The IMD forecasts a gradual rise in maximum (daytime) temperature over the Maharashtra region during the next four to five days.
- Minimum Temperature: There will be no large change in minimum (nighttime) temperature over Maharashtra during the next two days, followed by a slight fall of 1-2°C thereafter.
Pune’s December Record: This December, Pune’s Shivajinagar station has already recorded 8 days with a single-digit minimum temperature. This is the highest count of such cold days in December since 2018.
Long-Term Cold Outlook
The long-range forecast suggests that low night temperatures are likely to continue until early next year. Anumap Kashyapi, a former scientist at IMD, noted that the weekly passage of Western Disturbances (WDs), followed by northerly winds, will keep night temperatures low until early January. The night temperature is expected to rise slowly until December 17, followed by another fall in night temperatures across North, Central India, Maharashtra, and adjoining areas for the next few days.

Here are the key temperature details and weather notes for different regions:
- Western Maharashtra (Pune): Intense cold persists, with a minimum temperature expected around 9°C and a maximum of 28°C. Clear skies and dry weather are expected.

- Agriculture: Farmers should remain vigilant as there is a possibility of disease affecting tur (pigeon pea) crops.
Citizens and farmers are urged to stay informed and take necessary measures to combat the continuing cold conditions.
