Mumbai, May 26, 2025: Just days after its grand inauguration, the Worli underground station on Mumbai’s Aqua Line (Metro Line-3) was left flooded and partially non-operational on Monday morning as torrential rains battered the city, marking a dramatic and early onset of the monsoon.

The unexpected flooding forced authorities to curtail metro services, with trains operating only up to Worli instead of the full route to Acharya Atre Chowk. The disruption drew sharp criticism online, as visuals of waterlogged platforms at the brand-new station circulated widely on social media.

The deluge — one of the heaviest this season — triggered widespread waterlogging, traffic gridlocks, and railway delays, throwing daily life in the financial capital into chaos. Between 9 and 10 am alone, Nariman Point recorded 104 mm of rain, with several other island city locations reporting similarly intense downpours.

Services on Central Railway’s Harbour line were suspended between Wadala Road and CSMT due to track flooding at Masjid station, while road traffic was brought to a crawl across major junctions including Hindmata, King’s Circle, and Parel.

Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its warning from an ‘orange’ to a ‘red alert’, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. The civic body also warned of high tide and further showers, urging residents to remain cautious.
