Varandha Ghat Closed to Heavy Vehicles for Three Months Due to Landslide Risks During Monsoon

Pune, 18th June 2025 – In response to increasing landslide risks and hazardous road conditions, the Pune District Collector has ordered the closure of Varandha Ghat to heavy vehicles for the next three months. This critical mountain pass, which connects Pune to Mahad via Bhor, is prone to monsoon-related dangers, including soil erosion, landslides, and road subsidence.
Precautionary Measures Amid Monsoon Threats
The decision comes as heavy monsoon rains lash the Western Ghats, making the already narrow and winding roads of Varandha Ghat even more treacherous. Officials cited ongoing road widening works, muddy terrain, and frequent slope failures as major concerns. The restriction applies to trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles, while light motor vehicles will be permitted—unless IMD issues red or orange alerts.
Total Shutdown During Severe Weather Warnings
During extreme weather alerts, even light vehicles will be barred from using the ghat to prevent accidents. Authorities highlighted that the steep slopes, thick forests, and poor visibility make the route highly vulnerable to landslides, falling trees, and road collapses.
