UPI Transaction Helps Woman Recover Lost Phone, Reddit Story Goes Viral

A simple digital payment turned into an unexpected lifeline for a couple who lost their phone during a shopping trip. A man shared on Reddit how Unified Payments Interface (UPI) helped his wife get her lost phone back, and the story has since gone viral.

The couple was travelling in a rickshaw when the woman accidentally dropped her phone. “As I was paying the auto driver and leaving, my wife dropped her phone in the rickshaw. We left without noticing it. The good part was, I paid him via UPI after scanning the QR,” the man wrote.

They only realised later that the phone was missing. Since the device didn’t have a SIM card, calling it was not an option. “At first, we thought someone might have stolen it, but then we realised she may have dropped it on the rickshaw,” he added.

Initially, the man could only see the UPI ID in his payment history and not the driver’s contact number. The couple assumed the phone was gone. But then came a surprise. The man received an SMS saying that Rs 1 had been credited to his bank account. The rickshaw driver had transferred the amount with a message: “plz call (his contact number).”

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” the man shared. He immediately called the driver, who soon arrived and returned the phone. The man thanked him and gave him some cash as a reward. “It was UPI that brought my wife’s phone back. If I had paid him in cash and not UPI, there was no way he could have contacted me,” he concluded.

Reddit users praised both technology and the driver’s honesty. One wrote, “That rickshaw driver is the hero of the story, even more than UPI.” Another added, “Happy for you. Good rickshaw guy.” Some even shared similar experiences where UPI details helped recover lost belongings.
