Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir — A horrific terror attack in the picturesque town of Pahalgam has sent shockwaves across the world, as 26 people — mostly tourists, including two foreigners — lost their lives in one of the worst terrorist strikes in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years. Several others were injured in the attack, including an intelligence officer.

Gunshots rang out in Baisaran Valley when a group of heavily armed terrorists emerged from the surrounding woods and opened fire indiscriminately on a gathering of tourists. The assailants quickly vanished back into the forest after the assault. Initial reports indicate that The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banned Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility.

India Responds Swiftly

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Saudi Arabia at the time, cut short his visit and is returning to New Delhi. He condemned the attack strongly, calling it a “heinous act” and assured the nation that those behind the attack would face justice. “Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable,” he posted on X.

Home Minister Amit Shah promptly left for Srinagar to assess the situation and coordinate with security agencies. An investigation is underway.

Global Leaders Stand with India

United States

US President Donald Trump termed the incident “deeply disturbing,” writing, “The United States stands strong with India against terrorism. Our hearts are with you all!” US Vice President JD Vance, currently visiting India, also extended condolences, stating, “Usha and I are overcome with the beauty of India and stand in mourning with its people.”

Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the attack a “brutal crime with no justification” and reiterated Russia’s commitment to deepening counterterrorism cooperation with India. He extended his sympathy to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman conveyed his condolences and offered India any necessary support, expressing solidarity during the ongoing India-Saudi Strategic Partnership Council meet.

United Arab Emirates

The UAE strongly condemned the attack, labelling it a “heinous crime” against innocent civilians. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its rejection of terrorism and extended support to India.

Israel

Israel’s Foreign Minister and Ambassador to India expressed shock and solidarity, pledging support for India’s ongoing fight against terrorism.

Italy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the attack “deeply saddening” and extended solidarity to the Indian government and its people.

United Kingdom

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “utterly devastating” and extended sympathies to the victims and their families.

Iran

The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi issued a statement condemning the attack and offering heartfelt condolences to India.

Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government strongly condemned the strike and reaffirmed its support for India in fighting terrorism and ensuring regional peace.

France and European Union

French Ambassador Thierry Mathou and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued powerful condemnations. The EU termed it a “vile terror attack” and reaffirmed that India’s spirit is “unbreakable.”

International Outrage and Unity

This attack has not only rattled the Indian subcontinent but has also galvanized international condemnation. The global outpouring of support reaffirms India’s position as a key partner in the global fight against terrorism. As security forces intensify their search for the perpetrators, world leaders are uniting behind India in mourning the victims and denouncing terrorism in all its forms.

Blatant Silence from Pakistan, China and Canada

There has been no reaction from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, China, or Canada on the terror attack. The silence comes amid already strained diplomatic ties – India and Canada have faced tensions over allegations over the death of a Khalistani extremist, while New Delhi is also navigating a fragile relationship with Pakistan’s all-weather friend China following border standoffs.

In a statement, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said, “Pakistan has no link with the Pagalgam terror attack.”

Irrespective of the status of relationships, it is expected of these countries to condemn violence against civilians in any part of the world. Their conspicous silence is a proof of their double standards towards terror and violence.
