Sedan Segment Sees Nearly 9% Monthly Decline

Last month, the mass-market sedan segment saw a collective drop of 8.48% compared to March 2025, with only one model bucking the downward trend. While most automakers faced shrinking demand, this particular sedan recorded a 10% month-on-month (MoM) growth—outperforming every competitor by a significant margin.

The Undisputed Leader

Maruti Suzuki Dzire is the most selling Indian car

The Maruti Dzire once again proved why it remains India’s favorite compact sedan. With 16,996 units sold in April 2025, it not only surpassed its March figures (15,460 units) but also outperformed its April 2024 numbers (15,825 units). Remarkably, the Dzire’s sales alone were higher than the combined sales of all other mass-market sedans on the list.

How Other Sedans Fared

Hyundai Aura (Including Xcent): Held second place with 4,224 units, but saw a 17% MoM decline.

Honda Amaze: Despite a 12% YoY growth, its monthly sales plummeted by 44% (2,019 units).

Volkswagen Virtus: Though monthly sales dipped by 18%, it recorded the highest YoY growth (36%) in the segment (1,605 units).

Tata Tigor (Including EV): Struggled with 1,296 units, marking a 40% YoY decline.

Skoda Slavia: Sold 1,048 units, down 12% MoM and 16% YoY.

Hyundai Verna: Managed 1,005 units, suffering a 36% YoY drop.

Honda City: The worst performer, with just 406 units sold, witnessing a 65% MoM crash.

Key Takeaways

While the sedan market continues to face challenges, the Dzire’s strong brand appeal, affordability, and fuel efficiency keep it ahead of the pack. Meanwhile, models like the Virtus and Amaze showed resilience in yearly growth, hinting at shifting consumer preferences.

With SUVs gaining more traction, will sedans stage a comeback, or is the Dzire the last standing champion? Only time will tell.
