A powerful dust storm blanketed Rajasthan’s border areas with Pakistan on Wednesday, prompting weather alerts across the state. Cities in Western Rajasthan, including Bikaner and Sri Ganganagar, faced extreme heat followed by turbulent weather, while the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur has issued a fresh alert for thunderstorms and rainfall in 12 districts on May 17.

Dust Storms Sweep Across Border Regions

Due to a western disturbance, multiple districts experienced gusty winds and shifting weather patterns. The impact was particularly severe in areas near the Pakistan border, where a massive dust storm swept across Bikaner and Sri Ganganagar, turning the skies into a dense haze of sand.

In Hanumangarh, strong winds and overcast conditions were observed. Other affected cities included Kota, Jhalawar, Udaipur, and Dungarpur, which experienced cloudy weather followed by afternoon showers.

Scorching Heat in Western Rajasthan

Despite the storm and rain, several cities endured sweltering heat. On May 15, maximum temperatures soared in the western part of the state:

  • Sri Ganganagar recorded the highest temperature at 45.1°C
  • Bikaner followed with 43.9°C
  • Jaisalmer registered 43.4°C
  • Jaipur reached 41.8°C
  • Jodhpur and Ajmer saw highs of 41.6°C and 40.8°C respectively

Bikaner, after a scorching morning, witnessed a sandstorm originating across the Pakistan border. The dust enveloped the entire region, creating a dramatic transformation in the sky.

Rainfall Brings Brief Respite

By afternoon, dark clouds rolled in across Bikaner, Udaipur, and Kota divisions. Parts of Udaipur and Kota received light showers, offering temporary relief from the blazing temperatures.

Weather Forecast: Heatwave and Rain Ahead

The Jaipur Meteorological Centre has predicted ongoing heatwave conditions for Bikaner and Sri Ganganagar from May 15 to 17. However, on May 17, thunderstorms and rainfall are expected in 12 districts spread across Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Udaipur divisions. This shift in weather could bring much-needed respite to several parts of the state.

As Rajasthan braces for another day of weather extremes, authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions amid soaring temperatures and dust storms.
