Mumbai, June 5: In a harrowing incident aboard the LTT-Nanded Special Express, a Panvel-based doctor lost his arm while attempting to save his wife from a bag-snatcher in the early hours of Wednesday. The couple, identified as Dr. Yogesh Deshmukh (50) and Dr. Deepali Deshmukh (44), were traveling with their 9-year-old daughter when the attack occurred.

The Terrifying Ordeal

At around 3:35 AM, an unidentified man, approximately six feet tall and wearing an almond-colored shirt, entered their coach near Kanjurmarg. He attempted to snatch Deepali’s purse, which was hanging from her shoulder as she slept on the middle berth. A violent struggle ensued, during which the attacker dragged her out of the moving train.

Hearing the commotion, Yogesh leaped from the upper berth and jumped out after her. Tragically, he lost his balance, and his left arm was severed under the train’s wheels, reported IANS. Despite her injuries, Deepali carried her severely injured husband along the tracks, flagging down a tempo and an auto-rickshaw to rush him to Fortis Hospital in Mulund.

Police Investigation Underway

The assailant fled with the purse containing ₹4,500, but no other belongings were stolen. The couple’s daughter was safely escorted off the train at Kalyan station, and their luggage was handed over to authorities.

Senior Inspector Sambhaji Yadav of Kurla GRP confirmed that an FIR has been filed, and multiple teams are working to apprehend the suspect. The GRP and RPF have intensified vigilance following the incident.

A Family’s Trauma

The Deshmukhs, both medical professionals, were en route to Latur to visit family when the attack occurred. Yogesh remains hospitalized, while Deepali, though injured, managed to file a formal complaint.

This shocking incident highlights the dangers of nighttime train travel and has sparked calls for increased security on Indian railways.
