Rajesh Agarwal Appointed as Maharashtra’s New Chief Secretary
Mumbai, December 01, 2025: The Maharashtra government has appointed senior IAS officer Rajesh Agarwal as the new Chief Secretary of the state. He succeeds Rajesh Kumar, who retired on November 30 after receiving a three-month extension post his original retirement date in September.
Agarwal, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch, recently returned to Maharashtra after serving in key roles at the Centre. Upon his return, he was posted as Additional Chief Secretary in the state’s General Administration Department, handling administrative reforms and good governance. His tenure as Chief Secretary is expected to be for one year.

Before his deputation to Delhi, Agarwal served as Principal Secretary of Maharashtra’s Information Technology department. In the central government, he held several important positions, including Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. He also served as Director General of Training, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and Joint Secretary in the Department of Financial Services.
His experience across various departments, both in the state and at the Centre, is seen as a strong asset as he steps into the top bureaucratic post in Maharashtra.
