If you’re in Pune or Mumbai, you might want to keep your umbrella close by for the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for the region, forecasting a spell of thunderstorms and significant rainfall starting today and peaking around Friday.

According to the forecast, Pune can expect a series of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph at isolated places from September 12th through the 15th. The intensity is expected to ramp up significantly on Thursday, September 14th. On that day, the city is set for heavier rainfall and similar strong, gusty winds.

The situation is even more serious for the ghat areas near Pune. The IMD has upgraded the alert for the ghats on the 14th to an Orange Alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall alongside the thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. This indicates a higher probability of severe weather conditions that people should be prepared for.

Neighboring Mumbai is also in for similar weather, though slightly less intense. The financial capital is under a Yellow Alert for September 13th and 14th. Residents can anticipate thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate showers, and those same gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in some areas.

This active weather pattern isn’t limited to the major cities. The IMD reports that a majority of districts in the region are under a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The entire Konkan coast and the Western Ghats are under Yellow and Orange Alerts, specifically for heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

It’s a good idea to plan your travel accordingly, avoid venturing out unnecessarily during heavy downpours, and stay updated on the latest weather warnings.
