Railways Remove Speed Restriction; Trains to Run Faster on This Route
Indian Railways has officially removed critical permanent speed restrictions on the Mumbai-Nagpur route. This infrastructure milestone is set to significantly reduce “slack time” and enhance the punctuality of high-speed icons like the Vande Bharat and Duronto Express.
The Asvali-Padli Breakthrough
The Central Railway (CR) confirmed the completion of the Through Formation Treatment (TFTR) on the Up line of the Asvali-Padli section. For years, an 800-meter stretch in this semi-ghat region was under a Permanent Speed Restriction (PSR) of 75 kmph. Due to a 9-meter high track formation and a sharp 2.26-degree curve, the section required constant monitoring, especially during the monsoon.
Following strategic engineering work initiated in late 2025, the restriction has been lifted, allowing trains to maintain uniform sectional speeds.
Speeds Scaled to 130 kmph
The removal of the Asvali-Padli bottleneck is part of a wider speed-enhancement mission across the Bhusaval and Nagpur divisions. Key sections including Bhandak-Majri and Tinkheda-Katol have seen permissible speeds jump from 75–100 kmph to a blistering 130 kmph.
“Removing these PSRs is like clearing a traffic jam on a highway,” said a senior Central Railway official. “Even a short 800-meter restriction forces a heavy rake to decelerate and then struggle to regain momentum, causing a cascading delay for trailing trains.”
Impact on Passenger Experience and Punctuality
The upgrade directly addresses the primary grievance of long-distance commuters: unpredictable delays.
- Better Punctuality: Central Railway reported an 86% punctuality rate for FY 2025-26; these upgrades aim to push that figure past 90%.
- Faster Vande Bharat & Duronto: With sectional speeds hitting 130 kmph, the flagship Mumbai-Nagpur services will see more consistent travel times.
- Increased Capacity: Modern signaling and stable tracks allow for more trains to be “slotted” into the timetable, potentially increasing the number of daily services.
Future Outlook: The 160 kmph Goal
While the current upgrades stabilize the route at 130 kmph, the Indian Railways is already laying the groundwork for Kavach 4.0 integration. Once the automated protection system is fully deployed along the Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai trunk line, officials expect to test speeds of up to 160 kmph on select stretches, bringing the two cities closer than ever before.
