Intense Monsoon Activity Across Pune

According to Dr. Vineet Kumar, a noted weather scientist, a strong rain band has developed over the Pune ghats and Pune-Mumbai Expressway, increasing the likelihood of torrential downpours. The Indian National Ocean Information Center (INCOIS) has also issued a high-wave warning for the Konkan coast, predicting waves between 3.4 to 4.4 meters from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

Monsoon Progress: Excess in Pune, Deficit in Marathwada & Vidarbha

Latest satellite observations indicate active monsoon bands along the West Coast, stretching from Kerala to Gujarat, with varying intensity. Moderate cloud cover persists over Maharashtra’s ghat regions, while West Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Gujarat report moderate to heavy cloud formations.

  • Pune (Shivajinagar) has recorded 260.7 mm of rainfall this June—the highest since 2014.
  • India, on average, has received 6.6% above normal rainfall this month.
  • However, Marathwada (-49%) and Vidarbha (-45%) continue to face severe rainfall deficits, worsening drought conditions.

Tamhini Ghat Makes History with 2000mm Rainfall

In a remarkable development, Tamhini Ghat (Mulshi, Pune) has become the first station in Maharashtra’s Sahyadri Ghats to record 200 cm (2000 mm) of rainfall this season. With 40 mm received today alone, the total has reached 2000 mm as of June 26, 2025.

Amateur forecaster Abhijeet Modak stated, “This marks a strong start to #Monsoon2025 for the ghat section.”

Precautionary Measures Advised

  • Avoid travel to ghat sections and coastal areas due to landslide and high-wave risks.
  • Stay updated on weather alerts from official sources.
