Pune Winter Relaxes as Temperatures Climb into Double Digits; Respite for Residents

PUNE: After a shivering start to the year, Pune residents are finally finding relief from the biting cold. According to the latest data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and insights from weather experts, the city is witnessing a gradual rise in minimum temperatures, effectively ending the recent streak of single-digit mercury levels.

On Monday, January 12, the city’s weather stations recorded a diverse range of minimum temperatures. While NDA remained the coolest at 9.5°C, it was the only station to stay below the 10-degree mark. Core areas like Shivajinagar recorded 10.9°C, while suburban pockets like Magarpatta and Wadgaonsheri saw much warmer nights at 16.9°C and 16.6°C, respectively.

The Forecast: Warmer Nights Ahead

Weather scientist Dr. Vineet Kumar noted that as per the IMD-GFS model, minimum temperatures are expected to stay in the double digits from January 12 through January 19. The “single-digit chill” that gripped the city last week is unlikely to return in the immediate future.

The 7-day forecast indicates a steady warming trend:

  • January 12-13: Minimums will hover around 10°C to 11°C with morning haze.
  • January 14-15: The mercury is expected to rise further to 12°C under mainly clear skies.
  • January 16-17: A peak in the current trend is expected, with night temperatures reaching 13°C and daytime maximums touching 31°C.

Expert Analysis

The rise in temperature is attributed to a change in wind patterns. The northerly cold winds, which were responsible for the recent cold wave-like conditions, have weakened. This shift, combined with clear skies, is allowing the city to transition into a milder winter phase. While mornings may still carry a slight nip, the “biting cold” that necessitated heavy woollens is subsiding.
