Pune University Flyover to Fully Open by Jan 15: Big Traffic Relief for Aundh, Baner, and Pashan

The long, grueling wait for thousands of Pune commuters is finally entering its final days as the multi-level Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) flyover is slated for a full operational launch by January 15, 2026.

Final Ramps Nearing Completion

According to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the massive ₹277-crore infrastructure project has reached its final stretch. While the Aundh-to-Shivajinagar arm has been serving commuters since last August, the critical Baner and Pashan ramps are now undergoing final safety audits and finishing touches.

PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase recently confirmed that the structural work on the Baner-end ramp was concluded in late December. Work on the Pashan exit is moving at a rapid pace to meet the mid-January deadline.

No Formal Inauguration to Speed Up Access

In a move that will likely please frustrated residents, the flyover is expected to open without a traditional, high-profile inauguration ceremony. Following directives from the Chief Minister’s office, the priority remains immediate public utility. Once the safety certificates are issued by the second week of January, barricades will be removed to allow the flow of traffic from the western suburbs directly into the heart of the city.

The Double-Decker Advantage: Traffic and Metro

The SPPU flyover is not just a road project; it is a sophisticated double-decker structure designed to solve two problems at once:

  • Lower Deck: A six-lane vehicular highway designed to bypass the infamous University Chowk bottleneck.
  • Upper Deck: The dedicated corridor for the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, which is currently on track for a March 2026 trial run.

Long-Awaited Relief for Pune Commuters

Since the demolition of the two old flyovers in 2020, Ganeshkhind Road has become synonymous with peak-hour gridlock. The completion of this 1.7-km flyover is expected to reduce travel time from Baner and Aundh to Shivajinagar by at least 15 to 20 minutes.

Traffic police are already preparing a new circulation plan for the University junction to ensure that the increased speed of vehicles descending from the flyover does not create new choke points at the ground level.
