University Double-Decker Flyover to Open Tomorrow

Pune, March 07, 2026: A major infrastructure milestone for the city will be achieved on Sunday as the much-awaited double decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk is set to open for public use on March 8, 2026, at 10:00 am.

The project has been developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The innovative structure is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion at one of Pune’s busiest intersections and improve connectivity between key areas of the city.

The double decker flyover has been designed to accommodate both the metro corridor and road traffic on the same set of pillars. This engineering approach optimizes space in the crowded University Chowk area and marks a major step in Pune’s evolving urban transport infrastructure.

With the opening of the flyover, travel between Aundh, Baner, Pashan, and Shivajinagar is expected to become faster and smoother. The project is seen as a key intervention to reduce bottlenecks at University Circle, which witnesses heavy daily traffic due to its proximity to educational institutions, business hubs, and arterial roads.

According to PMRDA, the flyover has a total length of 1.70 km including ramps, with a 1,112.52-metre viaduct forming the main elevated stretch.

Key features of the Savitribai Phule Pune University Double Decker Flyover include:

  1. Total project length of 1.70 km including ramps, with a viaduct measuring 1,112.52 metres.
  2. Two-lane up-ramps each for traffic moving from Aundh and Baner towards Shivajinagar.
  3. A 55-metre steel girder span at University Chowk designed to prevent disruption to traffic movement at the junction.
  4. A three-lane flyover from Shivajinagar towards Baner and Pashan.
  5. Two-lane down ramps to facilitate smooth traffic dispersal.
  6. An at-grade road connection on Ganeshkhind Road for vehicles heading towards Senapati Bapat Road.

Officials say the project represents an important step in strengthening Pune’s transport network, while also supporting the city’s expanding metro system. By integrating metro infrastructure with road traffic on the same structure, the design helps reduce land acquisition needs and improves traffic management in the area.

The opening of the double decker flyover is expected to bring significant relief to daily commuters travelling through University Circle, which serves as a critical gateway linking western Pune with the city centre.
