New Delhi, June 25, 2025 – In a major boost to Pune’s urban mobility, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, comprising two new elevated corridors—Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B). These extensions will expand the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor (Phase-1) by 12.75 km, featuring 13 stations and improving connectivity across key suburban hubs.
Project Details & Key Features
- Corridor 2A (Vanaz to Chandani Chowk) and Corridor 2B (Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi) will serve rapidly developing areas like Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi.
- Completion Timeline:Â Four years from approval.
- Estimated Cost: ₹3,626.24 crore, shared equally by the Government of India, Maharashtra Government, and external funding agencies.
- Strategic Integration: The new corridors will link with Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court) at the District Court Interchange Station, ensuring seamless multimodal travel.
- Future Ridership Projections: Expected to serve 96,000 daily commuters by 2027, rising to 3.49 lakh by 2057.
Boosting Public Transport & Reducing Congestion
The extensions will enhance connectivity to IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential areas, encouraging a shift from private vehicles to metro rail. Key benefits include:
- Decongestion of arterial roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road.
- Eco-friendly, fast, and safe transit for Pune’s growing population.
- Intercity bus integration at Chandani Chowk (Mumbai/Bengaluru routes) and Wagholi (Ahilya Nagar/Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar routes).

Implementation & Progress
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will oversee construction, including civil and electro-mechanical works. Pre-construction activities, such as topographical surveys and design planning, have already begun.
Long-Term Vision
This expansion aligns with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), aiming to establish a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor for robust East–West connectivity. The project is expected to unlock economic growth, improve urban infrastructure, and promote sustainable development across the metropolitan region.
