The long-awaited Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar metro line is set to reach a major milestone as trial runs on an 11-km stretch will begin in September, according to officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

The metro line, developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, has faced multiple delays due to land acquisition challenges, permit issues, and tender-related complications.

Originally scheduled for a March 2025 trial, the project timeline had to be revised. PMRDA had to push the contractor to accelerate the pace of work, especially after issuing warnings of penalties for further delays. The metro work initially began in November 2021.

Rinaj Pathan, chief engineer at PMRDA, shared that station facilities are nearing completion and current trial runs are already being conducted at the Maan Depot metro track. “Since the metro is developed under PPP, it will open in one phase—from Hinjawadi to the District Court. Passenger operations are expected by March 2026,” Pathan added.

Though the trial run is targeted for September 2025, commuters will have to wait until early next year for full-fledged metro operations to begin.
