Pune Toddler Dies in Reversing Car Accident, Driver Booked Under New BNS Laws

In a tragic incident that has left a community in mourning, a two-year-old boy, the son of an Indian Air Force officer, died on Thursday after being run over by a car on the premises of the Air Force Station in Pune’s Lohegaon area.
The Viman Nagar Police have detained a 37-year-old woman in connection with the case. The accident occurred around 12:30 PM near the Sakshem Playschool located within the 9 BRD campus of the station.
The child has been identified as Vidarth Mavi, who was just two years and three months old. His father, Vipin Mavi (34), is an Air Force officer residing at quarters on the base. It was he who filed the official complaint with the police.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Viman Nagar Police Station (Crime No. 443/2025), the incident was a result of negligent driving. The FIR states that the accused woman was reversing her car “in a manner that disregarded traffic rules, recklessly, carelessly, and at high speed.”
Crucially, the FIR alleges that due to this manner of driving, she “forcefully hit and seriously injured the complainant’s son,” which ultimately led to the toddler’s death.
Based on the father’s complaint, the police have invoked serious sections of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The key charges include:
- BNS 106:Â Causing death by negligence.
- BNS 281:Â Rash driving on a public way.
- BNS 125(A):Â Endangering the life or personal safety of others.
- BNS 125(B):Â Knowingly engaging in an act which is likely to cause grievous hurt or danger.
Additional relevant sections from the Motor Vehicles Act have also been applied. The woman was detained for questioning, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the full sequence of events that led to this heartbreaking loss.
