The Maharashtra government has cleared the way for a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Pimpri Chinchwad, near Pune. State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced on Thursday that 70 acres of land in Moshi has been approved for the project.
The decision follows directions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Bawankule said the long-pending plan will now move ahead quickly after being under discussion for nearly a year.
This will be the first time Pune hosts an IIM. Known as a major centre for industry, IT, and automobiles, the city will now add one of the country’s top management institutes to its profile.
Currently, India has 21 operational IIMs, including two in Maharashtra, one in Mumbai and another in Nagpur. The upcoming Pimpri Chinchwad campus will be the third in the state, further strengthening Maharashtra’s position as an education hub.
