Pune: Sinhagad Fort Closed for Visitors on May 29 Due to Landslide Risk

The Pune Forest Department has announced the temporary closure of Sinhagad Fort for visitors, including trekkers, on May 29 due to incessant heavy rainfall and an increased risk of landslides. The decision comes as a precautionary measure ahead of a scheduled disaster management inspection and an India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast predicting sustained heavy rain in the region over the coming days.
Tushar Chavan, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Pune), stated that all access routes to the fort—including Kalyan Darwaza, Atkarwadi, and other popular trekking paths—will remain strictly closed for the day. The department has issued an official release urging visitors to avoid the area for their safety.
An official disaster management inspection is also scheduled for Thursday, May 29, 2025, as part of the ongoing safety assessment. “All citizens are requested to cooperate with the administration,” the Pune Forest Department stated in a press note issued by the Deputy Conservator of Forests.
“Sinhagad Fort will remain closed only on 29th May 2025. If the fort is to remain closed on any additional dates, a separate order will be issued accordingly”, said the officer.
The move follows days of heavy rainfall, raising concerns about potential landslides in the region. Authorities are taking proactive steps to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
