Pune Shivers as Temperatures Plummet to Single Digits; NDA Records 6.9°C; No Cold Wave Likely

Pune temperature

Pune | January 9, 2026: Residents of Pune woke up to a biting chill this morning as the minimum temperature in several parts of the city and district plunged into single digits. According to the latest data released today, Shivajinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 8.4°C, marking a significant drop that has brought the classic winter sting back to the city.

The NDA (National Defence Academy) and Haveli areas were among the coldest in the region, both recording a bone-chilling 6.9°C. Other areas like Pashan (8.3°C), Malin (7.8°C), and Baramati (9.2°C) also saw the mercury sliding well below the 10-degree mark.

Why is it so cold?

Weather experts attribute this sudden dip to a specific atmospheric setup. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, explained that the presence of an anticyclone in Central India is driving cold northerly winds into Maharashtra via Northeast Vidarbha. This flow of dry, cold air has resulted in a rapid fall in night temperatures across the state.

Is there a Cold Wave?

Despite the shivering temperatures, officials have clarified that this does not technically qualify as a “Cold Wave.”

“As the minimum temperature departure from normal is not minus 4.5°C or less, a Cold Wave is not likely,” stated Kashyapi.

While the city is shivering, the departure from the seasonal average isn’t extreme enough to trigger an official alert. However, the single-digit chill is expected to persist for the next 48 hours.
