Pune’s public transport is getting ready for a throwback ride with a modern twist. Double-decker buses are all set to make a comeback, with a trial run planned in key IT hubs like Hinjawadi, Magarpatta, and Kharadi.
The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) is working on bringing these buses to the city, following a green signal from Switch Mobility, a Chennai-based company that also supplies buses to Mumbai’s BEST service. One of their electric, air-conditioned double-decker buses will reach Pune this week from Chennai.
For about a month, the bus will be tested in areas around the IT parks to check how well it runs and whether it fits the city’s routes and traffic conditions. PMPML officials and representatives from Switch Mobility will monitor the trial closely.
If everything goes smoothly, these buses could soon hit the roads regularly, offering a more efficient way to move people around without needing extra buses or frequent trips.
What’s special about the new buses?
The buses are electric and fully air-conditioned, offering a smooth and comfortable ride thanks to advanced suspension. They also come with digital ticketing and are designed to look similar to London’s famous red double-decker buses. Each bus can carry up to 70 seated passengers and 40 standing, meaning more than 100 people can travel in a single bus. At a cost of ₹2 crore per bus, the maintenance expenses are expected to be much lower compared to older models that PMPML used years ago.
With a height of 14 feet 4 inches, these buses will easily pass through metro stations and other infrastructure without issues.
PMPML previously operated double-decker buses but discontinued them in 1995 due to high maintenance costs. The new electric buses, however, are more efficient and budget-friendly, making them a practical choice for today’s needs.
“We want to see how these buses perform and identify the best routes. Once the trial is successful, we’ll move quickly to relaunch the service,” said Pankaj Deore, CMD of PMPML.
