Pune: Rural Police Restricts Usage of Drone Camera for Photography; Prior Police Permission Mandatory

Pune, May 31, 2025: Pune Rural District authorities have imposed strict restrictions on the use of drone cameras by private individuals, event organizers, and professional photographers. According to the new directive, operators must notify the local police station at least seven days in advance and obtain formal permission before flying drones.
The decision follows growing security concerns due to the presence of critical religious sites, dams, and central institutions in the district. Authorities suspect drones could be exploited for surveillance by terrorists or criminal elements.
Reports of unauthorized nighttime drone activity in Daund, Baramati, and Shirur talukas have also raised alarms among residents. Additionally, illegal sand mining operations may be using drones for monitoring, while thefts facilitated by drones remain a possible threat.
The ban extends to all remote-controlled microlight aircraft, paragliders, para motors, hang gliders, and hot air balloons. Unauthorized use of such devices without police approval is strictly prohibited.
Deputy District Magistrate Jyoti Kadam warned that violators will face legal action under Section 233 of the Indian Penal Code. Officials emphasize compliance to maintain public safety and security.
