Pune, August 31, 2025: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has added four new AI-enabled radar vehicles to its fleet to crack down on traffic offences and improve road safety. The move comes as the city faces rising cases of reckless driving and road accidents.

These interceptor vehicles are fitted with advanced radar technology, cameras, speed detectors, and wireless communication systems. The radar can track vehicles moving at high speeds and capture violations such as overspeeding, lane cutting, riding without helmets, and not wearing seat belts.

Once a violation is detected, the system instantly scans the vehicle’s number plate, verifies details from the RTO database, and issues an e-challan directly to the offender’s mobile or email. Each vehicle has the capacity to generate 700-800 challans per hour.

Officials said the system, also called the Mobile Tracking Enforcement System (MTES), is equipped with infrared lights, making it effective even at night or during foggy conditions. The RTO also plans to expand the use of these radar vehicles to highways and major city roads soon.

Authorities hope the new technology will act as a deterrent to rash driving and help bring down accidents across the district.
