Pune has reported a noticeable jump in conjunctivitis cases over the past ten days, with doctors linking the surge to continuous rains and changing weather. Health experts estimate a 15–25% rise in cases, commonly known as “pink eye.”

Conjunctivitis causes redness, irritation, swelling, watery eyes, sticky discharge, and sensitivity to light. It can spread through viral or bacterial infection, both of which are highly contagious, while allergy-related cases are not.

Doctors in the city say cases have risen sharply in recent days, with many hospitals now treating eight to ten patients a day. Until recently, hardly a single case would appear in a week, but the numbers have climbed quickly. They caution that with festivities around the corner, the chances of the infection spreading further are higher.

Medical facilities across Pune are reporting similar figures, with around seven to eight patients turning up daily over the past two weeks. Experts point out that while the situation is not alarming, viral conjunctivitis is a common seasonal illness during the monsoon.

Health officials have also confirmed that patients are coming to government clinics for treatment. Free consultation and medicines are being provided, and people are being advised to avoid self-medication, maintain proper hygiene, and rest at home if infected. Officials stressed that there is no outbreak in the district at present, but precautions are essential.

Doctors are advising citizens to remain cautious, especially with festive gatherings round the corner, and to seek prompt treatment if symptoms appear.
