Pune: Police Set July 31 Deadline for CCTV Installation in School Transport Vehicles, Joint Inspections to Ensure Safety

Pune, June 23, 2025 – In a decisive move to enhance the safety of schoolchildren, the Pune Police Commissionerate has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in all school transport vehicles by July 31. A joint inspection campaign by the Pune Police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) will ensure compliance with safety guidelines issued for school transport operators.
Despite schools reopening on June 16, violations such as overcrowding and non-compliance with safety norms were reported from the very first day. In response, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar held a high-level meeting with transport officials, directing strict enforcement of regulations, reported Hindustan Times.
Key Safety Measures:
- CCTV Cameras Mandatory in all school transport vehicles by July 31.
- Annual Eye Checkups for drivers, with valid certificates to be verified by school authorities.
- Joint Inspections by Police & RTO to monitor overcrowding, rash driving, and adherence to safety norms.
- Strict Action against violators, including vehicles without CCTVs or unqualified drivers.
Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy RTO, Pune, emphasized, “The July 31 deadline is non-negotiable. Violators will face strict penalties.”
Parents have welcomed the decision. A parent, said, “CCTVs will bring accountability. Overcrowded autos and rash driving endanger our children—this step was long overdue.”
The RTO’s June 21 circular outlines inspections based on guidelines from the School Transport Committee and Student Safety Committee, ensuring a structured enforcement approach.
Post-deadline, violators risk fines and suspension of permits. The initiative aims to curb negligence and prioritize child safety in Pune’s school transport system.
