In response to rising incidents of theft, harassment, and indecent behavior against female commuters, the Pune city police, in collaboration with PMPML, has formed a ‘Special Squad’ to enhance women’s safety on public buses.

The squad, comprising two inspectors, one assistant inspector, one sub-inspector, and 22 personnel, will conduct undercover checks on Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses across city and suburban routes. PMPML, serving 8-10 lakh daily passengers across 381 routes, has faced increasing complaints, prompting this initiative.

PMPML staff have been directed to immediately report harassment cases to police control rooms and drive affected buses to the nearest police station if needed. Satish Gavhane, PMPML Chief Manager of Operations, stated that this move will ensure safer travel for women and all passengers.

Regular commuter Madhuri Jadhav welcomed the move, hoping that CCTV surveillance and police presence would deter offenders and improve women’s safety.
