Pune, March 2, 2026: In a comprehensive vision document aimed at reshaping the Pune Metropolitan Region, PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase has outlined a strategic “Blue-Print” for the city’s future. Published as a special feature in local print press, the plan emphasizes that the upcoming transition is not merely a financial allocation but a long-term commitment to creating a sustainable, capable, and environment-friendly metropolis.
With Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad expanding rapidly due to the concentration of IT hubs, industries, and educational institutions, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is currently executing 220 minor and several ambitious major projects with a projected investment of ₹33,390 crore.
Revolutionizing Connectivity and Traffic Management
To tackle the region’s most pressing challenge, traffic congestion, the PMRDA has prioritized infrastructure with an outlay of ₹18,376 crore. Key highlights include:
- The Ring Road Project: Construction of a 127-road projects spanning 589 km, featuring an 83 km Internal Ring Road designed to divert heavy traffic away from the city center.
- Metro Expansion: The 23-km Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro line is slated to become operational by April, costing approximately ₹7,500 crore.
- Tunneling Projects: A feasibility study is underway for a 20 km tunnel between Yerwada and Katraj (estimated at ₹7,500 crore) and a broader 54 km underground network to streamline north-south transit.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: A double-decker flyover at University Chowk and 17 junction improvements are in progress to ease bottlenecks in high-density areas like Chakan and Hinjawadi.
A Green Legacy: River Rejuvenation and Sanitation
Dr. Mhase emphasized that “balanced development” requires a synergy between infrastructure and ecology. The PMRDA has earmarked significant funds for environmental conservation:
- River Pollution Abatement: ₹1,967 crore has been allocated for three independent projects to clean the Indrayani and Pawana rivers.
- Sewage Management: An investment of ₹1,209 crore is proposed for wastewater treatment, ensuring the conservation of water resources and recycling.
- Rural Sanitation: Tenders have been issued for sewage treatment plants across 57 villages (with populations between 1 to 5 lakh), aiming to boost public health in the peri-urban belts.
Scientific Urban Planning: The TP Scheme Model
Moving away from haphazard growth, the PMRDA is championing Town Planning (TP) Schemes. The Mhalunge-Maun project, covering 250 hectares, serves as the flagship model with an investment of ₹616 crore. This “model suburb” integrates roads, schools, parks, and social infrastructure into a scientifically planned layout, providing a roadmap for future developments in Wadachiwadi, Autade, and Holkarwadi.
“PMRDA projects are not just constructions; they are a citizen-centric movement for sustainable development based on three pillars: roads, public transport, and environmental balance,” stated Dr. Yogesh Mhase.
As the authority moves toward implementation, the focus remains on transparency, financial discipline, and technical precision to ensure these projects are completed within their stipulated timelines.
