Pune: PMRDA, MIDC to Hold Crucial Meeting After Severe Flooding at Hinjawadi IT Park

Pune News, June 11, 2025: The recent severe flooding at Hinjawadi’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park has exposed critical infrastructure lapses and a lack of coordination between the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), the two key authorities responsible for the area’s development.
In response, PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase has called a high-level stakeholder meeting on Wednesday to address long-standing drainage and infrastructure issues. The move comes after heavy rains caused extensive waterlogging, disrupting operations in the IT hub.
Joint Inspection Reveals Blocked Drains, Unregulated Constructions
On Monday, MLA Shankar Mandekar led a joint inspection with senior officials from PMRDA, MIDC, Hinjawadi Gram Panchayat, and resident representatives. The team found that natural stormwater drains had been blocked due to rampant construction, leading to severe water accumulation.

MIDC has assured of cleaning the drains but this still needs lot of proper drains & more followups. pic.twitter.com/q4QQ687Yi1
One of the worst-hit areas is the road near Dohler Company in Phase 2, where stagnant water remains unresolved. MIDC officials admitted that underground drainage pipeline work is still pending, exacerbating the crisis.
Real Estate Boom Blamed for Worsening Drainage
Officials highlighted that unplanned real estate and corporate expansions have obstructed natural water flow, causing poor rainwater drainage. In some cases, untreated sewage is being discharged into nearby farmlands, prompting frustrated farmers to build barriers—further aggravating flooding.
PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase stated, “There are multiple issues in Hinjawadi—from blocked drains to unregulated constructions.”
Meanwhile, Nitin Wankhede, Chief Engineer, MIDC, claimed that most MIDC-maintained roads are in good condition, except an 8-km stretch affected by metro construction. He also pointed out several buildings lacking proper sewage systems, noting that PMRDA has been informed.
Authorities Accused of Passing the Buck
Residents and business owners have criticized authorities for delayed action and blame-shifting instead of providing concrete solutions. With monsoon intensifying, the Wednesday meeting is seen as a crucial step toward resolving the crisis.
