Pune, July 25, 2025: Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pimpri Chinchwad Police launched a joint inspection and action drive on Thursday to tackle growing traffic congestion and encroachments in Pune’s rapidly developing Hinjawadi and Chakan areas. PMRDA Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Deepak Singla and Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Choubey led the visit to key traffic choke points including Bhujbal Chowk, Wipro Circle, Shivaji Chowk, Maan, and Laxmi Chowk.

Hinjawadi: Swift Action Against Encroachments
Following directions from Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and under the guidance of PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, over 200 encroachments and more than 25 illegal hoardings have been removed in the past 15 days in areas like Hinjawadi, Maan, and Marunji. The anti-encroachment campaign, led by Dr. Deepti Suryawanshi-Patil (Head, Unauthorized Construction Removal Department), Tehsildar Asha Holkar, and field engineers, has already brought significant relief to motorists in the tech corridor.

The inspection highlighted the urgency to widen roads and expedite development works including the metro line. Officials were instructed to remove remaining encroachments without delay and prioritize pending infrastructure tasks.
PMRDA’s Aggressive Push in Chakan Industrial Belt
Simultaneously, PMRDA has initiated emergency road repair and traffic decongestion plans in the Chakan industrial region, plagued by deteriorating road conditions, heavy congestion, and frequent accidents.
Under Dr. Mhase’s chairmanship and in the presence of MLA Babaji Kale, a high-level meeting was held with senior officials from MSRDC, MIDC, PWD, NHAI, and other government bodies. Several concrete decisions were taken:

- Immediate start of roadwork by NHAI
- Removal of encroachments and identification of alternate road routes
- Strengthening industrial connectivity through new road networks
- Submitting repair proposals for critical stretches like Pune–Nashik Road, Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur, Moi to Chikhali, Nighoje to Kurli, and Chakan to Alandi
- Coordination across agencies to ensure timely funding and execution
Chief Engineers Rinaaz Pathan (MSRDC) and Nitin Wankhede (MIDC) were present, along with representatives from industry bodies and local elected leaders.
Broader Vision: Decongest and Develop
The PMRDA’s recent activities underscore a larger urban mobility and infrastructure vision. While immediate steps like encroachment removal offer short-term relief, long-term plans involving metro expansion, road widening, and better industrial connectivity aim to transform Hinjawadi and Chakan into more accessible, efficient urban zones.
The anti-encroachment initiative has drawn widespread media attention, signaling PMRDA’s proactive approach in addressing core urban issues and building a more livable Pune Metropolitan Region.
