Pune is preparing to launch its first open-gallery sightseeing bus, similar to the popular Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) buses in London and New York. PMPML has already built a prototype at its own workshop, setting the stage for a new tourism-focused service in the city.

The bus features an open-top upper deck that will offer panoramic views of Pune’s heritage structures, cultural spots and modern landmarks. Officials said the idea is to give residents and tourists a fresh way to explore the city while helping PMPML strengthen its non-fare revenue.

PMPML chairman and managing director Pankaj Deore said the transport body faces a recurring operational deficit every year and is looking at tourism-based services as an additional income stream. He added that the open-gallery bus aims to provide an international-style sightseeing experience without outsourcing the vehicle’s construction.

The bus is expected to be ready in the next couple of months. After trial runs and mandatory approvals, the service will be launched on a special heritage route covering major attractions across Pune.

Before announcing the launch date, PMPML is conducting a route-by-route safety assessment. Several city roads have low-hanging power cables and tree branches that could pose a risk to passengers seated on the upper deck. Commuters and local groups have urged PMPML to coordinate with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and MSEDCL to clear obstructions well in advance.

Commuters said the concept is promising but stressed the need for proper surveys. “On many stretches, tree branches scrape bus roofs and electric wires are too low. Safety should come first, especially for an open-top service,” they said.

Residents who have experienced similar tours abroad believe the move will benefit the city. Local traveller Madhuri Ghule said such buses are popular in international cities and could boost tourism in Pune as well.

Once the safety checks are cleared and the official route map is finalised, Pune will see its first open-gallery bus offering a guided, open-air look at the city’s old and new landscapes.
