Pune: PMC Shuts Gas Crematoriums Amid LPG Shortage; Electric Facilities Operational
Pune, March 11,v2026: In a move prompted by a directive from the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Pune Municipal Corporation has temporarily suspended the use of all gas-based cremation furnaces within the city limits effective March 5, 2026. The decision comes as the central government prioritises the supply of propane and butane for domestic LPG cylinders.
According to the PMC, the Ministry’s order mandates that available gas components be reserved primarily for household use, leading to a temporary shortage of fuel for non-domestic purposes. Consequently, all civic gas crematoriums will remain closed until further notice.
However, the civic body has assured citizens that alternative arrangements are in place to ensure last rites can be performed without inconvenience. Electric cremation furnaces and systems equipped with Air Pollution Control technology will continue to operate across the city.
Alternative Electric Crematorium Locations
To manage the load and prevent overcrowding at specific sites, the PMC has urged citizens to utilise the electric facilities at their nearest available location. The list of operational electric crematoriums includes:
- Gunjan Chowk, Nagar Road
- Kharadi Gaon
- Kailas Shamshanbhumi, Sangamwadi (near SSPMS Ground)
- Guruganesh Nagar, Kothrud
- Aundh-Baner Link Road, Baner
- Ganganagar, Hadapsar
Special Provisions at Key Sites
At the Vaikunth Crematorium, the three gas-based furnaces have been shut down, but the facility’s five electric furnaces remain fully functional to serve the public. Similarly, at the Bibwewadi crematorium, two gas furnaces supplied by Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited will continue to operate, specifically catering to residents in the Dhankawadi and Katraj areas.
The PMC has appealed to citizens to cooperate with the administration during this period and make use of the electric crematoriums to avoid any last-minute difficulties.
