Pune: PMC Launches 24×7 Cleanliness Drive Near Airport to Tackle Hygiene & Flight Safety Risks

Pune News, June 30, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a round-the-clock cleanliness drive along Airport Road following growing concerns over unhygienic conditions that have led to an increase in stray animals and birds, posing risks to flight operations.

The decision comes after senior officials and local representatives expressed strong dissatisfaction with the deteriorating sanitation in the area. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has flagged the presence of stray animals and birds near the runway as a potential hazard to flight safety, prompting urgent municipal action.

Strict Measures Implemented

A special directive has been issued to ensure cleanliness within a four-kilometre radius of Pune Airport, covering all surrounding zones. A senior health inspector, has been appointed as the nodal officer to supervise the drive across three shifts.

Key Responsibilities

The officers have been tasked with:
✔ Ensuring public cleanliness from Pune Airport to 509 Chowk, including Nagpur Chawl and Kalwad Vasti.
✔ Preventing chronic garbage accumulation along the VIP route.
✔ Ensuring open plots are enclosed and maintained clean with ward office support.
✔ Conducting daily deep cleaning in coordination with local authorities.

Workforce & Monitoring

  • Adequate sanitation workers, garbage vehicles, and resources will be deployed across all shifts.
  • Workers will operate seven days a week, with one weekly off.
  • The Nagar Road zonal office will provide substitute workers as needed.
  • daily progress report must be submitted to the Solid Waste Management Department.

The PMC has emphasized that these measures will remain in effect until further orders, ensuring sustained cleanliness and flight safety near Pune Airport.
