Pune: PMC Initiates DPR for Three Key Roads in Wagholi to Tackle Traffic Congestion
Pune News, July 01, 2025: In order to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of three crucial roads in Wagholi. This development follows the area’s official merger into PMC limits in 2023, after which residents have persistently raised concerns over inadequate road infrastructure and heavy traffic on the Nagar Highway.
Urgent Need for Alternate Routes
Since its inclusion under PMC, Wagholi has faced growing traffic woes, prompting demands for alternate routes to decongest the Pune-Ahmednagar Highway. A senior PMC road department official confirmed the initiative, stating, “We are appointing a consultant to draft the DPR, which will cover route alignment, feasibility studies, and land requirement assessments. The report is expected within six months.”
Bypassing Delays with Regional Plan
While Wagholi’s comprehensive Development Plan (DP) awaits approval, PMC has decided to proceed with roadworks identified in the existing Regional Plan (RP) to avoid further delays. The three proposed roads have been marked as high-priority projects.
Residents Welcome Move but Remain Cautious
Local commuters have welcomed the decision but remain skeptical about timely execution. “Traffic worsens daily. We desperately need parallel roads to the highway. If completed on time, these new roads could be a game-changer,” said a Wagholi resident and daily commuter.
Challenges Ahead
PMC has already started widening some internal roads, but obstacles like encroachments and land acquisition delays persist. The official admitted, “These issues are slowing progress, but we are working to resolve them for smoother implementation.” Meanwhile, PMC is exploring temporary traffic management solutions until the larger road development plan materializes.
Broader Concerns from Merged Areas
Other recently merged areas like Narhe, Dhayri, Ambegaon, and Manjari have also voiced frustrations over delayed road widening and poor planning, highlighting the need for swift action.
Important Points to Note:
✔ Three major roads planned to ease Wagholi traffic
✔ DPR to be finalized in six months
✔ Land acquisition & encroachments pose challenges
✔ Residents demand parallel roads to Nagar Highway
✔ Other merged areas await similar infrastructure upgrades
