The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the commencement of the second phase of Ganeshkhind Road widening, stretching from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to Sancheti Hospital, to alleviate chronic traffic congestion on this crucial corridor. This follows the successful completion of the first phase between Pune University Chowk and RBI, which was undertaken to facilitate the construction of the Pune Metro Line 3 double-decker flyover by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Project Details & Land Acquisition

The second phase spans approximately two kilometres, significantly longer than the initial one-kilometre stretch. However, the PMC faces the challenge of acquiring land from 52 properties along this route. So far, 12 property owners have handed over their land, while negotiations continue with major establishments, including:

  • Agriculture College
  • Rahul Theatre
  • Police Headquarters
  • Shivajinagar Police Chowky
  • College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) Hostel
  • Hardikar Hospital
  • LIC Building
  • Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education

Manoj Ghate, Executive Engineer of the PMC Road Department, stated, “We require portions of both private and public properties. The estimated cost for road widening is ₹58 crore, while land acquisition expenses will be calculated separately by the Land and Estate Department.”

Strategic Importance of Ganeshkhind Road

Ganeshkhind Road is a vital artery connecting key locations such as Pune University, Shivajinagar, and Pune Railway Station. The ongoing double-decker flyover project by PMRDA includes a vehicular flyover (first deck) and a metro viaduct (second deck), aiming to streamline traffic and enhance public transport efficiency.

Next Steps

The PMC is actively engaging with stakeholders to expedite land acquisition, ensuring minimal delays in this crucial infrastructure upgrade. Once completed, the widened road is expected to significantly reduce congestion and improve commute times for thousands of daily commuters.
