Pune: PCMC to Cut Water Supply to 184 Housing Societies from June 1 Over STP Non-Compliance

Pune, May 31, 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced the suspension of water supply to 184 housing societies from June 1 due to their failure to operate Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The decision was confirmed by PCMC Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh on Friday after repeated appeals to activate STPs went unanswered.
Commissioner Singh stated, “We have urged society chairpersons and secretaries multiple times to activate their STPs, considering their challenges. However, 184 societies failed to comply, forcing this action.”
Out of 456 identified societies, only 264 have functional STPs, while 184 remain non-compliant. Notices were issued—84 first warnings, 50 second warnings, and 50 third warnings—yet societies cited financial constraints and other reasons for inaction. Eight societies even denied entry to inspection teams.
PCMC supplies 620-630 MLD of water daily, but many societies still depend on tankers. Enforcing STP usage aims to reduce potable water demand by repurposing treated wastewater for gardening, cleaning, and other non-drinking purposes. Compliant societies receive property tax concessions, but many continue to neglect regulations.
A society member anonymously shared, “There’s a dispute with our builder. We need more time to comply.” Another chairman claimed ignorance, requesting an extension.
As per Maharashtra’s UDCPR 2020, large residential, commercial, and institutional developments must install STPs. PCMC has now enforced penalties for non-compliance to address water scarcity.
