Pune: Over 46 Lakh Commuters Opted for Pune Metro in April 2025; Expansion Plans Progressing Steadily

In a strong indication of growing public preference for rapid transit, the Pune Metro saw 46,59,164 passengers in April 2025. Known for its eco-friendly and time-saving benefits, Pune Metro has become a popular mode of transport for daily commuters across the city.

The Pune Metro Project began in December 2016 with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A key milestone was achieved in March 2022 when parts of the Purple and Aqua lines were inaugurated, revolutionizing the city’s public transport network.

Current Operational Lines:

  • Purple Line (PCMC – Swargate): Spanning 17.4 km, this line has 14 stations (5 underground and 9 elevated).
  • Aqua Line (Vanaz – Ramwadi): Covering 15.7 km, this fully elevated corridor has 16 stations.

Upcoming Line:

  • Line 3 (Hinjawadi – Shivajinagar): Branded as the Puneri Metro, this line is under construction. Implemented through a public-private partnership between PMRDA, Tata Projects, and Siemens Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, it is expected to be operational by late 2025 or early 2026.

  • Line 1 – Purple Line (PCMC–Civil Court–Swargate): Operational
  • Line 2 – Aqua Line (Vanaz–Ramwadi): Operational
  • Line 3 – Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar: Under Construction (update awaited)
  • Purple Line Extensions:
    • PCMC to Nigdi – Under Construction
    • Swargate to Katraj – Under Bidding
  • Aqua Line Extensions:
    • Ramwadi to Wagholi – Pending Central Government Approval
    • Vanaz to Chandni Chowk – Pending Central Government Approval
  • Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla): Pending Central Government Approval
  • Line 5 (SNDT–Warje–Manikbaug): Pending Central Government Approval
  • Line 6 (Hadapsar–Loni Kalbhor and Hadapsar–Saswad Road Railway Station): Awaiting approvals from PMC, State & Central Government
  • Katraj–Hinjawadi Line: Proposed

With expansion plans in full swing, Pune Metro aims to drastically improve city-wide connectivity and ease traffic congestion, making urban commuting faster and greener.
