Pune, July 26, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the ghat regions of Pune, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated spots. The alert underscores the increased risk of landslides and flooding in the hilly terrain, prompting authorities and citizens to exercise caution, especially while commuting along hilly routes.

For urban Pune areas, a yellow alert has been issued, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated locations. While not as severe as a red alert, a yellow alert still signals the potential for waterlogging and localized traffic disruptions, particularly during peak hours. Commuters and residents are advised to plan their travel and daily routines accordingly.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Alert

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which passes through the Western Ghats, is particularly vulnerable under the current weather conditions. The IMD’s red alert for the ghats makes it likely that the expressway will experience intermittent heavy downpours, increasing the chances of landslides and traffic bottlenecks. In fact, a landslide was reported just yesterday on the Mumbai-bound lane, causing significant disruption. Authorities recommend avoiding travel on the expressway if possible, or proceeding with extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Rain Alerts in Other Regions

In addition to Pune, Mumbai and other coastal Konkan districts are under an orange alert, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Travelers heading toward Mumbai or the Konkan region should prepare for slippery roads, delays, and localized flooding.
Meanwhile, Palghar district has been placed under a red alert today, with forecasts indicating extremely heavy rainfall, which could lead to serious disruptions and hazardous conditions.

Precautionary Advice

  • Avoid hilly routes and the expressway unless necessary.
  • Check traffic and weather updates before stepping out.
  • Avoid low-lying areas and regions prone to waterlogging.
  • Keep emergency numbers and supplies handy, especially for those in ghat or coastal areas.

With the monsoon intensifying, the IMD continues to monitor the situation closely. Citizens are urged to stay informed and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
