Pune: Nationalised Bank’s Chief Manager Dies by Suicide in Baramati, Blames Work Pressure in Note
Pune News/Baramati, July 18: In a tragic incident, a senior official of a nationalised bank allegedly died by suicide inside the bank premises in Baramati, Pune district, late Thursday night. The deceased has been identified as Shivshankar Mitra in his late 40s. According to police, Mitra was serving his notice period after resigning as chief manager on July 11, citing health issues and excessive workload, reported PTI.
According to officials from the Baramati police station, Mitra hanged himself using a rope after asking all staff members, including the watchman, to leave the branch. “After banking hours, Mitra instructed the staff to leave, stating he would close the branch. The watchman departed around 9:30 PM. Earlier, Mitra had asked a colleague to bring a rope, which he later used to take his own life at around 10 PM. The entire incident was captured on the bank’s CCTV cameras,” the official stated.
When Mitra did not return home or respond to phone calls, his wife grew concerned and arrived at the bank around midnight. She noticed the lights were still on and, after receiving no response from inside, alerted bank staff. Upon opening the branch, Mitra was found hanging from the ceiling. A suicide note recovered from the scene cited “work pressure” as the reason behind his extreme step.
“The note did not blame anyone, and it appears Mitra was undergoing medical treatment as well,” the police official added.
Authorities have registered a case, and further investigations are underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
