Pune: Mulshi & Pawana Dams Release Water into Mula and Pawana Rivers; Authorities Issue Safety Alert

Pune News, July 07, 2025: In response to rising water levels due to ongoing rainfall, authorities have increased discharge from Mulshi Dam and Pawana Dam into the Mula River. The Pune District Information Office confirmed that Mulshi Dam is releasing 5,800 cusecs, while Pawana Dam has also begun controlled releases to manage reservoir capacity.
Current Dam Storage Levels
- Mulshi Dam: 76.33% full
- Pawana Dam: 76.22% full
With heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, both dams are experiencing significant water inflow, necessitating regulated discharges to prevent overflow risks.
Precautionary Measures Issued
Suresh Kondubhairi, a representative from Tata Power (which operates Mulshi Dam), stated that discharge rates may be adjusted—increased or decreased—based on weather conditions. Authorities have issued a strict warning for residents to:
✔ Avoid entering the Mula River’s banks or low-lying areas
✔ Stay alert for sudden surges in water flow
✔ Follow official updates from the Pune District Information Office
Why This Matters
- Public Safety: Rising water levels pose risks of strong currents and flash floods.
- Water Management: Controlled releases help maintain reservoir stability while ensuring Pune’s water supply.
- Monsoon Watch: Further adjustments may occur if rainfall persists.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, and residents are urged to exercise caution near rivers and follow advisories.
