Pune: Midnight Rescue in Sadashiv Peth: 10 Residents and a Pet Dog Saved After Building Gallery Collapses
PUNE, March 18, 2026: A late-night structural collapse at an apartment complex in the heart of the city triggered a high-stakes rescue operation, resulting in the safe evacuation of ten residents and a pet.
The incident occurred at Charudatt Apartment, 1420 Sadashiv Peth, during the final minutes of Tuesday. At approximately 11:58 PM on March 17, a significant portion of the building’s boundary wall, gallery, and internal staircase collapsed suddenly. The structural failure effectively cut off the exit routes, trapping residents inside the three-story building.
Upon receiving the emergency call, the Pune Fire Brigade dispatched a rescue fire engine and a Janata fire engine from the central fire station.
Tireless Rescue Efforts
Firefighters arriving at the scene found the structure compromised, with the staircase rendered unusable. Using extension ladders, safety belts, and ropes, the rescue teams initiated a floor-by-floor evacuation.
In a coordinated effort that lasted over an hour, firefighters successfully rescued:
- Five women * Five men * One pet dog
The residents were brought down safely from the first, second, and third floors as crowds gathered in the narrow lanes of the Peth area. No fatalities or major injuries were reported at the time of the operation.
Authorities On-Site
The rescue operation was supported by Police Officer Shinde and his team to manage the perimeter. Engineers from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and staff from the MSEB were also present to inspect the structural integrity of the remaining building and disconnect power lines as a safety precaution.
While the immediate danger has been averted, the PMC is expected to conduct a formal assessment to determine the cause of the collapse and whether the building remains habitable for the rescued families.
