Pune Metro Set to Launch Unique ‘Coach Restaurant’ Near District Court Station

Pune Metro is turning an old coach into a fully air-conditioned restaurant near the District Court station, a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at boosting non-fare revenue while offering commuters a memorable dining experience.

Maha Metro has completed the conversion of a retired metro coach into a fully air-conditioned restaurant near the Pune District Court Metro Station, with the facility expected to open to the public in the coming days .

The ‘Metro Coach Restaurant’, supplied by Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), has been strategically positioned near the Family Court section of the Pune District Court, chosen for its proximity to the metro station which serves as an interchange for two major corridors, Vanaz–Ramwadi and Pimpri Chinchwad–Swargate .

A New Revenue Stream for Maha Metro

This initiative represents a strategic move by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) to diversify revenue beyond ticket sales. Officials project the coach restaurant will generate approximately ₹1.45 lakh per month once operations begin .

According to Maha Metro, the tender process is currently being finalized, after which the facility will commence full operations offering affordable and quality food options to passengers and visitors .

Sustainable Reuse Meets Passenger Experience

Chandrashekhar Tambvekar, Additional Director General (Public Relations) for Maha Metro, said the initiative focuses on delivering good services at reasonable rates while simultaneously boosting non-fare revenue .

Authorities noted that the project exemplifies sustainable infrastructure management by repurposing old rolling stock into functional commercial space, turning what would otherwise be retired assets into community amenities .

The location is expected to draw not only daily commuters but also tourists and visitors to the District Court complex. Thousands of passengers travel through the District Court Metro Station daily, given its role as an interchange hub connecting key city routes .

What to Expect

While an exact opening date has not been announced, officials confirmed the project is complete and will become operational shortly after formalities conclude. The Pune Metro coach restaurant will be fully air-conditioned, providing a comfortable dining environment for patrons .

This development comes amid broader metro expansion across Pune, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently announcing plans for a 200 km metro network across the Pune Metropolitan Region .
