Pune: The much-anticipated Pune Metro Line 3, connecting the Man-Hinjewadi IT Park to Shivajinagar, has entered its final leg of construction. Officials have set an ambitious target to operationalize the first phase of 12 stations by May 2026.
With the project currently 94.20% complete, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the deadline is met. In a recent rigorous review, PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari conducted an extensive ‘on-ground’ inspection of the entire 23.2 km corridor.

Moving beyond paper-based assessments, Dr. Chaudhari personally evaluated the quality of work and addressed technical challenges on-site, directing contractors to expedite the remaining work. This hands-on approach underscores the authority’s commitment to delivering the city’s first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) metro project, which is also a first of its kind in the country.
Key Highlights of the Project:
- Rapid Progress: The overall physical progress of the project stands at a robust 94.20%.
- Safety & Tech Clearance: Critical technical milestones, including signaling tests and safety certifications from the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), have been completed.
- Seamless Connectivity: Upon completion, the travel time between Shivajinagar and Hinjewadi will be reduced from over an hour to just a few minutes, providing massive relief to IT professionals and daily commuters.
- Pioneering Model: This corridor is the country’s first metro rail project to be developed under the PPP model.
Dr. Chaudhari emphasized the commitment to the May 2026 deadline for the first phase. “Our goal is to complete the first phase of 12 stations by May 2026. After conducting on-ground inspections of all stations, we have issued directives to accelerate the work. PMRDA will provide all necessary cooperation for this project promptly,” he stated.
The completion of this line is expected to be a game-changer for Pune, offering a fast, reliable, and congestion-free alternative for thousands of commuters who currently face severe traffic bottlenecks on the city’s western corridor.
With the finish line in sight, the dream of a congestion-free commute for Punekars is finally on the verge of becoming a reality.
