Pune Metro Inaugurates Tanpura-Shaped Pedestrian Bridge Over Mutha River

Pune Metro has added a unique pedestrian bridge to its network, connecting Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan Metro Station to the densely populated Shaniwar Peth area. The bridge, shaped like a traditional tanpura, was inaugurated today, 1 September 2025, by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The new pedestrian bridge links Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan Metro Station with Shaniwar Peth, Narayan Peth, and nearby crowded areas, making metro access easier for residents. It forms part of Pune Metro’s first phase, which spans 33 km with two active corridors: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Station to Swargate Station, and Vanaz Station to Ramwadi Station. Currently, over 200,000 passengers use the metro daily across these routes.

The tanpura-shaped bridge is built over the Mutha River using advanced cable-stayed technology. With only two pillars in the river, it minimizes any disruption to the river flow. Its design reflects Pune’s cultural heritage, located near Bal Gandharva Rangmandir, blending engineering with artistic elements. The bridge is exclusively for pedestrians, marking it as Pune’s first such river-crossing structure and boosting the city’s pedestrian movement.

Technically, the bridge is 179.79 meters long and 8 meters wide. It features India’s first 70-degree angled concrete pylon, supported by 20 high-tension cables. Nearly 984 cubic meters of concrete were used in its construction. The bridge’s innovative design and strategic location enhance connectivity while preserving Pune’s cultural identity.
The inauguration was attended by Union Minister of State Murli Dhar Mohol, Maharashtra State Minister Madhuri Misal, MLAs Siddharth Shirole and Hemant Rasane, along with senior officials and staff of MahaMetro and Pune Metro.
