The Journey to 10 Crore Passengers

The Pune Metro’s first phase was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2022, covering routes from PCMC to Phugewadi and Vanaz to Garware College. Initial daily ridership figures stood at around 20,000–30,000 passengers.

The Metro saw a significant boost on August 1, 2023, when the line expanded from Phugewadi to Civil Court and Garware College to Ruby Hall Clinic. Daily ridership climbed to 1 lakh–1.1 lakh as a result. Another milestone came on March 6, 2024, with the completion of the East-West corridor from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi, pushing ridership to 1.2–1.3 lakh.

Underground Expansion and Growth

A major expansion occurred on September 29, 2024, when the underground route from District Court to Swargate opened. This development increased daily passenger numbers to approximately 1.6–2 lakh, further propelling the Metro towards its 10-crore passenger goal.

Looking Ahead: Line 3 Launch in 2026

Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), expressed pride in this achievement and emphasized the organization’s commitment to providing a safe, reliable, and disciplined travel experience.

The upcoming Line 3, connecting Hinjawadi to Shivaji Nagar, is expected to be operational in 2026 and projected to significantly increase ridership figures.

The Pune Metro’s success story reflects not just infrastructure growth, but also the city’s steady move towards sustainable, modern urban transport solutions.
