Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday hinted at the possibility of establishing an additional municipal corporation within the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR). If approved, this would bring the total number of civic bodies in the region to three—Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and a newly proposed corporation.
The announcement followed remarks by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who earlier in the day stressed the need for three municipal corporations in the PMR while addressing traffic and infrastructure concerns in the Chakan MIDC area. His comments had initially sparked speculation about the formation of multiple new civic bodies.
Clarifying the proposal, CM Fadnavis stated, “Pawar suggested one additional corporation, not three new ones. With the inclusion of one more civic body, there will be a total of three in the PMR.”
The move comes amid growing demands to bifurcate the PMC, which currently holds the largest geographical jurisdiction among municipal corporations in Maharashtra. The recent merger of 34 villages and two cantonment areas into PMC limits has further strained its administrative and infrastructural capabilities.
Residents in these newly merged areas have consistently raised concerns over inadequate civic amenities, including irregular water supply, insufficient drainage systems, and poor street lighting. Urban planners and civic activists have long advocated for a separate municipal corporation to decentralize governance, enhance service efficiency, and cater to the distinct developmental needs of peripheral and industrial zones.
The proposal is expected to undergo further deliberation, with stakeholders assessing its feasibility and potential impact on urban governance in the rapidly expanding metropolitan region.
